Coffee Banana Protein Shake

I tried this recipe last week in an attempt to consume bananas. You might have read my little rant in my previous blogpost about how I can’t stand them. But I had an extra after trying a banana pancake recipe and just happened to have bought Starbucks Via instant coffee a long time ago when it was on sale, so I thought why not?

The downsides to this recipe is one serving is 302 calories and 44 grams of carbs (because of the banana). The upsides are the 22 grams of protein and the fact that it’s delicious. All I could taste was chocolatey coffee goodness. The banana made it just like an ice cream milkshake.

I would say that if you’re counting carbs ( I try to stay under 65 grams per day), I wouldn’t have this every day. You could, but then you would have to really pay attention to your carb content the rest of the day. But if you’re feeling like ice cream, whip up this instead.

Coffee Banana Protein Shake
Recipe from Sweet Tooth Sweet Life

1 packet of Starbucks Via ready brew (I used vanilla flavored)
1/2 cup vanilla almond milk (I use the unsweetened from Trader Joe’s)
1 frozen banana
1 scoop chocolate whey protein (I used Gold Standard Double Chocolate)
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 tsp of sweetener (I used Splenda…I know I know. It was all I had at the time….)
3 large ice cubes

Now first off, don’t do what I did. I added the bananas first, then added all of the other ingredients. That worked out fine, except I found the coffee flavor a little strong. Instead, pour the instant coffee and almond milk in first. Mix that up. That will help dissolve the coffee. Then add the rest of your ingredients and blend.

Also this might be common knowledge already, but since I’ve never bought a banana in my life before last week, I had no idea. To freeze a banana don’t put the whole thing in the freezer. I did this the first time and my hands froze trying to peel the darn thing. Peel the banana, cut it in half and then put it in a baggie to freeze.
Doesn’t it look like chocolate ice cream? So tasty. And feel free to try substituting different flavors to see what you get. Maybe try a mocha or vanilla flavored protein powder. Try the chocolate almond milk or a different flavored instant coffee.

Also I wanted to mention the Splenda. I wanted to avoid a sugar all together originally. I’ve been going around in circles as to what to use: Truvia, Splenda, fake sugar, real sugar…I know that a ton of people are screaming to stay away from Splenda. And I’ve learned enough through paleo/primal blogs to stay far far away from every type of fake chemical sugar. But I found the coffee taste to be a little too bitter without some type of sweetener. Since I had a few packets of Splenda, I just threw those in. But I’m starting to think about trying Truvia next.

What do you guys think? Have you found a sweetener that you swear by?
