Last Friday was my birthday. And since I knew that I was going to retry the Whole30 starting this week, I decided last week that I would allow myself to eat anything I wanted. No restrictions whatsoever. Part of me wanted to enjoy all of the things I was going to give up. Part of me wanted to see what would happen if I decided not to eat paleo. Th results were pretty eye opening.

As always, thanks to Jenn for hosting WIAW. Go check out the 100+ other bloggers for awesome meal ideas!

Breakfast: This past week I allowed myself two items that I haven’t had in almost 6 months: yogurt with granola and bagels. The yogurt is actually a Pumpkin Spiced one from Argo Tea. As you can see from the nutritional information, this “healthy” breakfast isn’t so healthy. On the bottom was my Pumpkin Spiced latte and bagel from Starbucks. Those lattes I swear are crack in a cup. Have you tried one yet?! Because you should. Only order a tall and hold the whip cream. And get it hot, never cold. Tried it cold one day. It’s disgusting.

My birthday breakfast. Jake took me to Frog N Snail, the new restaurant owned by Dale from Top Chef. If you live in Chicago, go try their brunch. I was amazed that there was no wait. When the waiter brought my food he told me that this was one of Dale’s new dishes and I was the first person to try it. It was the Peanut Butter and Bacon Monte Cristo. Basically two pieces of french toast used to sandwich homemade peanut butter and bacon, topped with chopped apples and honey. OMG. Amazing. With something like this, any of the ingredients could have easily overpowered, but I thought it was the perfect balance. And the honey totally made this dish. Perfect for Rosh Hashanah (minus the bacon…I’m a bad Jew). The best part was we got to see Dale!

Lunch: Typical lunch was also something I haven’t had in a long time. A sandwich. This one was turkey on a pretzel roll with a side casar salad from Corner Bakery. I also tried the Asiago Roast Beef from Panera (which was terrible!) and the new Chipotle Turkey Sandwich from Au Bon Pain (which was delicious but 660 calories).

Yeah…that’s a cookie. I allowed myself cookies. This particular one is sugar from the Corner Bakery. Eh. My favorite was the toffee ones from Au Bon Pain.

Dinner: For my dinners, I actually stayed close to paleo. I didn’t really feel like cooking anything that I would fall in love with and then couldn’t have again. The top is Coconut Curry Chicken over Cauliflower Rice (wow that was a lot of C’s) and then Red Pepper Pesto with Ground Beef over Zucchini Pasta. I will be writing up those posts as soon as I get the time.

I did, however, write up the recipe for this one: Chicken Avocado Soup. That one was pretty tasty.

Results: So, what happens when I don’t eat paleo? When I tell myself that I can have bagels, dairy, sandwiches and cookies? Well….

1) I gained 10 lbs. No seriously. A full 10 lbs in 7 days. Which at 5 ft tall is a huge difference for me. The only thing that fits me now are my skirts with elastic. The only plus side is some of those 10 lbs went to my boobs.

2) My fibro pain has been awful. I’ve been hovering around a 6 or 7 on my 10 pt pain scale. And have had some really awful days where I caved and took my Vicodine.

3) My skin looks awful. I’ve had a few breakouts that I’ve been fighting all week.

So yeah, I feel pretty awful. However, I’m glad I did it. I needed to really see if eating paleo was worth it. I wouldn’t say that my diet was terrible this past week. It’s not like I ate cake for breakfast every day (although some would argue that bagels and granola are just as bad). Thankfully I’m starting the Whole30 again and have a feeling some of that extra weight will drop off quickly once I fix my eating (I will miss the boobs though…).

For the next 30 days, I will be posting lots of Whole30 recipes again. And will be sharing some of my tips and tricks that I’ve learned about recently that will make my Whole30 easier. If you’re not sure what the Whole30 is, you can check out my past blog posts, including my Whole30 Review, and check out the Whole30 website if you’re interested in trying it yourself.
