Last night I realized that I may have an unhealthy attachment to my computer. As I was coming home on the bus, I noticed that my laptop wasn’t in my bag. In my rush to leave work and head to the gym, I walked out leaving it on my desk. After I got over my immediate “Crap, where the hell is my computer?” I calmed down and accepted that I would be disconnected for one evening.

Unfortunately that meant that I wasn’t able to type up this post when I had wanted (or spend my normal 3+ hours on pinterest…).

Anyway, if you haven’t read part one yet of 8 Healthy Foods with “Secret” Unhealthy Ingredients, just follow the link. On to part two.

Canned Tomatoes

Del Monte Stewed and Diced Tomatoes. This was the food that sparked the idea for this blog post. Del Monte was on sale and I grabbed a few cans of it for my chili last week. Thankfully I turned the can over to look at the ingredients.

Not sure if you can see it in this picture, but the first three ingredients are: tomatoes, tomato juice and high fructose corn syrup…?  Yup, that one caught me off guard as well.

Thankfully I put those back and grabbed Hunt’s. Ingredients are tomatoes, tomato juice, salt.

Hot Sauce

Cholula Hot Sauce. I know this is a favorite among a lot of people. Unfortunately it also contains xanthum gum. Depending on what the xanthum gum is made from, it can contain traces of wheat, corn or soy.

Thankfully Tabasco contains only three ingredients: distilled vinegar, red pepper and salt.

Sauerkraut is a staple among paleo/primal eaters that need a little help getting things moving. Essential Everyday is just the Jewel-Osco generic brand. If you look at the ingredients, you’ll notice that they added two preservatives.

This is actually the same exact brand, only canned. And it only has three ingredients: prepared cabbage, water and salt.

When I did my first Whole30, I had the hardest time finding nuts without added oils. Planters cashews contain “peanut and/or cottonseed oil.” According to Mark’s Daily Apple, cottonseed oil isn’t the best thing to be eating, considering it comes from cotton and because it’s a GMO made by Monsanto.

Interestingly enough, the place I found nuts without added oils was in Walgreens’ brand. As you can see, they only have one ingredient. I’m sure I could probably also find nuts at Trader Joe’s or Whole Foods, but for those of you who aren’t near one, head to Walgreens.

Chili Paste

Thai Kitchen Roasted Red Chili Paste. Unfortunately I bought this without looking. I saw the “gluten-free” on the front and fell for it. Later I actually took a look at the back. The very first ingredient is sugar. The second is soybean oil…oops.

And more unfortunately, I haven’t found a chili paste to replace it. If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know.

Alright, that’s all I have for now. But I’m sure there will probably be more in the future.

  1. I didn’t check the ingredients list on the Del Monte tomatoes before buying one on sale, but when I added it to my pasta, it was obvious that something was wrong. It was as if someone added cheap ketchup (or catsup!) to my dinner. Then I looked at the can and found the HFCS that, by that time, I was expecting. The store brand never had this stuff, I can’t believe people pay extra for crap like this.
