So I have a long list of post ideas that need to be written. My original plan was another fitness one for today, but for some reason I just didn’t feel like it. I’m going to go out on a limb here and say it’s because of the weather. If you currently live in Chicago, you know what I mean. We’ve had nothing but freezing rain. Then again, it could be worse. At least it’s not below 0 again.
Anyway, I wasn’t planning on writing anything until I read Brittany’s Marvelous Monday. Maybe it’s a cop out, but I decided to do the tag too. This isn’t fitness or cooking related, but sometimes it’s nice to get to know each other a bit better. If you have a blog, I tag you to do it too. If you don’t have one, feel free to write your answers in the comments 🙂
Currently half way through “Gang Leader For a Day,” by Sudhir Venkatesh. I’m flying through it. First year Sociologist graduate student Sudhir at the University of Chicago, more or less joins the Black Kings to observe how they run their crack business inside the Robert Taylor Homes Housing Projects.
I originally put this book on my to-read list because it took place in Chicago. But as soon as I picked it up, I realized that the gang territory he was writing about was the same area that I taught in, From 2008 until 2010, I taught 7th and 8th grade low-income students in Hyde Park. Many of them, and their families, belonged to a local gang. In 2009, it became particularly bad when the majority of our 8th graders wore their gang colors to school for a month (something they aren’t allowed to do in case two students from rival gangs start fighting in class).
If you have seen and loved The Wire as much as I have, you will really enjoy reading this book.
Last night as I was cleaning the yoga studio where I work, I blasted Four Tet’s “There is Love in You.” Great album for calm yet not boring background music.
Current Guilty Pleasure:
Drinking store-bought Kombucha. Even though I’ve been brewing my own, I’ve been a little lazy on starting up the next batch. So in the meantime, I’ve been spending the $4 a bottle at the store. It hurts a little thinking of how much money I’m wasting, but it just tastes so good.
Current Nail Color:
Actually none. I decided that my nails needed a little break from polish to breath. As you can see from the photo, they’re turning a little yellow, which can happen if you wear nail polish all the time.
But look how long they are! It’s almost officially been one year that I’ve stopped biting them. Last January, I made a New Year’s resolution to stop. The goal was to have nice nails by Valentine’s Day. Thankfully after about a month and a half of not biting them, I managed to kick the habit.
If you’re also trying to stop, my recommendations are:
1. Buy Nail Magic. You can get it at Sally Beauty Supply for about $5. It’s a clear nail hardener and truly is magic. When you’re trying to grow out your nails for the first time, they can break or peel really easily. This stops that from happening.
2. Always have your nails painted nicely. If they start to chip, immediately redo them. If your nails look great, you’re less likely to mess them up by biting.
Lots of water. Black coffee. Pretty much all I am allowed to drink on the Whole30. Although in the afternoon, I occasionally make a cup of tea.
Left over chili that Jake made yesterday. Mostly because of the blog, I typically am the person that cooks at home. And since I actually enjoy grocery shopping, I normally do that as well. Except yesterday, after crawling into bed around 7am Sunday morning, I crawled back out around noon to run to the store. I knew our fridge was empty, and it was my job to go fill it. Except what I didn’t know, was that while I slept, Jake had snuck out, grabbed groceries for the week, and had chili cooking in the crockpot. Best boyfriend ever.
Current Favorite Show:
I can’t believe I’m actually saying this but my favorite show, hands down, is Archer. A while ago, Jake came home after a night with the boys and turned on an episode. I glanced over from time to time but decided that it was too crude for my taste.
But by the third episode, I quickly moved over to the couch to watch with him. It’s hilarious! I found myself consistently laughing during every episode. And even though some of the jokes are crude, they have a purpose. As Jake pointed out to me, each character is really developed from episode to episode. You can even see how Archer says lines that are very similar to his mother’s.
If you’re looking for a fun show (that’s only 20 minutes), watch a few episodes. They’re all on Netflix.
Current Wish List:
According to Amazon, my current wish list includes an electric kettle, a dutch oven, and Lea & Perrins Worcestershire Sauce – 2/ 15 oz (it’s the only Worcestershire sauce that doesn’t have a ton of filler ingredients, like high fructose corn syrup or Propylene Glycol Alginate).
Probably a hair cut…haven’t had it cut since October. Currently growing out the bangs. Then again, I read a quote somewhere that said “Everything you NEED, you already have.” Pretty good quote to think about.
Current Bane of My Existence:
Actually, nothing. I can say pretty confidently that I’m content right now.
Current Celebrity Crush:
Hmm…not really crushing on any celebrities right now. I’ve always had a thing for David Bowie. That will probably never go away. ::swoon::
Not really an indulgence exactly, but I’ve been treating myself to Lara Bars when I really want something sweet. I’ve been pretty good at treating them like a treat. It’s not an every day thing. “It Starts With Food” warns against feeding your sugar cravings with fruit or Lara Bars.
I have a lot to be thankful for. Great boyfriend, friends, job. I’m in a much better place than this time last year.
Old Navy Jeans, black tank top, tan sweater, black and white flats. Funny enough, the tank top, sweater and flats were all gifted to me during a clothing swap with my friend Alina. Basically all of us girls cleaned out our closets and brought what we didn’t want anymore to Alina’s. Then we traded. What is one person’s trash is another person’s treasure. Anything that no one wanted was donated to Good Will.
My Whole30 ends Wednesday and I’m 100% positive I’m going to make it. Also pretty excited that I will be able to have something sweet…like a cookie. Gluten-free, dairy-free cookie.
Eh, tired. But not too bad.
Whole Foods Coupons. If you have a Whole Foods near you, always check out their coupons. I had no idea this even existed. Got $1 off three Lara Bars on Friday (which also happened to be on sale as well).
Alright, that’s it. Thanks Brittany for the tag. Have a great Monday!
