This morning, before work, I went to the gym. And then 50 minutes later, I felt fantastic. There is something so satisfying about getting your workout in before the rest of the world has woken up. It’s quiet, the gym is probably close to empty, there are no meetings you have to run to, no errands you need to do. And by the time you’re at work, you know the hardest part of your day is over.
Recently I’ve become more and more interested in the fitness side of health. Yes, it’s true that what you put in your stomach is most important – “abs are made in the kitchen” – but it’s also important to push yourself physically. Diet can make you “skinny” but it’s the exercise that will make you fit.
And by exercise I don’t mean hours on a cardio machine. Yes I know girls, you “don’t want to get bulky.” I get it. My thigh muscles are huge. They have been all my life. And the idea of bulking them up even more terrifies me. But doing leg presses and squats won’t make me into the Incredible Hulk. They’ll just give me a nice ass.
Need more proof? Check out two of my biggest motivators:
Tanya Etessam. Former dancer turned fitness competitor. This girl lifts heavy weights as you can clearly see. And instead of spending hours running on the treadmill, she sprints.
If you’ve never heard of her, check out this interview at cutandjacked.com. (Yes, I know. This is a body builder website. Don’t be scared).
Not only are her photos amazing ( do you see her doing pistol squats ON a kettlebell?!) but it seems that she embrasses a paleo diet. It’s nice to see a fitness competitor who doesn’t fuel her workouts with cardboard-tasting rice cakes.
Savannah Rose Neveux. This girl is amazing. I first found her on bodybuilding.com ( Yes I know, another bodybuilding site ). But quickly started to follow her blog and instagram account. She updates them almost daily with great motivational quotes, pictures and tips.
And she’s relatable. Not that long ago she was an overweight college student, who participated in a little too much “partying and junk food.” Sound familiar?
Anytime I feel unmotivated or want to give into my cravings, I take a quick look at these girls. Which is exactly what I did last night. And is why I set my alarm clock for 6am this morning.
I got to try out my new baby, a Polar FT7. After a lot of research, I decided that was the best choice for a heart rate monitor since I didn’t need a GPS. (No way am I running outside with my asthma). It was awesome to use during my HIIT today. Turns out my heart rate can go up to 203. It was tough but seeing the calorie count blast up was a huge motivator to continue.
In case you were wondering, I did ZWOW 46. Not familiar with ZWOW? Check her out on youtube. Zuzana, the former fitness instructor from Bodyrock, started her own fitness channel where she uploads intense 12 minute HIIT workouts each week. And every single one can be done at home without gym equipment.
Need more motivation to get started? Insert obligatory awkward gym selfy photo. There you go. This is my before picture. That tiny little muscle there is what I’m working with.
So what about you? What is your motivation?
